The thing that gets me about 1.0 ranmei is. Shi Mei has orchestrated this relationship at Mo Ran's expense, and also he is repulsed and afraid the entire time, in part because of trauma that Mo Ran can't possibly know about but also in part because of what Mo Ran actually did. He planted the flower in Mo Ran, and only then learned from Hua Binan what Mo Ran would go on to do to Chu Wanning— because of Shi Mei. Meanwhile Mo Ran adores Shi Mei and wants nothing more than to protect him, but like, in a wildly pedestalizing way that comes with a distinct undercurrent of threatened sexual violence ("I would never rape you, you're so pure" might not sound like a threat to Mo Ran, but it sure does to Shi Mei!), and also this is only happening because Shi Mei mind controlled and manipulated Mo Ran into loving him. Shi Mei is traumatized and terrified and actively digging this hole deeper for himself but he can't stop or he'd be giving up on his life's work and that's unthinkable. They both signed up for this, kind of, but neither of them had any idea at all what they were getting into.

- During CWN's 5-year seclusion, Shi Mei doses himself with an aphrodisiac date rape drug to get Mo Ran to Have To protect and take care of him, which goes great right up until Mo Ran actually touches him and abruptly it becomes clear that Shi Mei has a metric fuckton of issues he's been shoving under the rug. Does Mo Ran assume he's imagining things? That Shi Mei's just nervous because he's so innocent virginal etc? That there's something else going on that he'd Have To protect Shi Mei from? All of the above? No bad options!
- Something pre-rift when Mo Ran is still under the flower's influence and convinced he's here to avert Shi Mei's death— how far can Shi Mei plausibly-deniably go while Mo Ran still thinks he's pure and innocent and has probably never even heard of sex?
- Something immediately post-rift - if Shi Mei had been a lighter touch when he asked Mo Ran what he'd meant to say at Butterfly Town, while they were both grieving and miserable and desperate, what might have come of it?
Or something else! This ship is a fantastic morass of sunk cost fallacies, Shi Mei very carefully walking the tightrope of the madonna/whore complex, and characters fooling themselves into thinking they've got everything under control while ignoring the mounting pile of evidence that they do not got everything under control; whatever you do with it I'm sure I'll be thrilled.

The incredible baggage they both have around sex and bodies and being up for consumption. Shared trauma, and non-shared trauma; how their childhood informs everything about them and means they're in some ways the only people who'll understand each other, but they've grown from that shared soil into two very different people who don't particularly like each other.
I'm imagining something during the period where Shi Mei is studying at Guyueye; for the first time he's away from Shisheng where everyone knows him as their pure sweet shimei, and he's in an environment that prizes lack of emotional attachment, working under an inventor of weird drugs, which is prime time for bad choices both HBN-related and otherwise. What form might that take? What's it like for both of them, living in a place where their people were so recently bred and sold? How does Hua Binan relate to Shi Mei— he's younger, he's not used to Guyueye, he didn't live through timeline 0.5, he's comparatively less traumatized; is that something Hua Binan derides, is it something he wants to stamp out? Is it something he wants, on some level, to protect?
